Epoxy table tops are valued for their clarity, durability, and seamless finishes. However, over time, minor scratches or a cloudy appearance can develop, especially when lower-grade resins are used or proper care isn't taken.

In this guide, we'll discuss why these issues tend to occur in the first place, how to prevent them, and how to repair your table top to restore its original shine.

Why Scratches and Cloudiness Occur

Epoxy surfaces are tough, but they aren’t immune to damage. The most common culprits include:

  • Everyday wear and tear: Placing objects with sharp or rough bases directly onto the surface can leave fine scratches.

  • Improper cleaning: Using abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemicals can dull the finish or leave micro-abrasions.

  • Low-quality resin: Inexpensive epoxies often have poor curing characteristics and are more prone to yellowing, soft surfaces, and clouding. Learn more here.

  • Moisture during curing: If epoxy cures in a humid or cold environment, trapped moisture can lead to a cloudy or uneven finish.

Preventing Scratches and Cloudiness

With proper care and a high-quality epoxy, surface scratches and cloudiness can be prevented entirely.

Here are a few proven tips for preventing damage and other types of blemishes in your epoxy table top:

Use coasters, placemats, or felt pads under objects

The risks of minor physical damage and heat damage are easily mitigated with the any kind of appropriate padding. Use coasters under hot mug, trivets, under hot pans or trays, and placemats or something similar for sharp items such as knives.

Clean only with a soft cloth and mild soap solution.

Epoxy surfaces are notoriously easy to maintain, requiring very little effort to clean. Warm water and mild soap can get the job done 99% of the time. You can also use a glass cleaner or multi-surface cleaner to accomplish similar things.

You'll rarely need something stronger, and we recommend against using anything harsh, such as bleach or pure vinegar, because not only is it unnecessary, but it can weaken or mar the finish over time. Instead, a diluted solution of bleach and water can be used, but do so sparingly to avoid softening the high-gloss finish.

Avoid placing hot items directly on the table top.

Epoxy is well known to be heat resistant, but that doesn't make it immune to heat damage. High heat can soften the finish or leave heat marks on a cured epoxy surface.

Always use trivets or other items suited for dispersing heat when placing hot dishes onto an epoxy surface. This will help you preserve your pristine epoxy finish.

Maintain proper environmental conditions (warm, dry, dust-free) during curing.

One cause of clouding in an epoxy finish occurs during the curing stage, before your surface is even usable. When performing an epoxy project, maintaing the right environmental conditions is essential to achieving that crystal-clear coating.

In most cases, this means a humidity level below 60%—fairly easy to ensure in most environments—as well as a temperature between 70°F to 75°F—with 75°F being the ideal.

Choose a high-grade epoxy resin with a proven record of durability and clarity.

The first and foremost aspect of blemish prevention is to choose an epoxy resin that doesn't compromise on quality. There are many epoxy brands these days, owing to a proliferation of overseas imports, and many of these epoxies are produced in subpar conditions, resulting in weaker or less attractive results.

To avoid this problem, focus on using a high-quality epoxy made in the U.S., such as our UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy, which is designed to meet professional standards while being beginnner friendly for DIY use.

How to Fix Scratches on an Epoxy Table Top

Minor scratches can often be removed with simple polishing, while deeper ones may require sanding and refinishing. Here’s how:

For Light Surface Scratches:

  1. Clean the surface with a soft cloth and soap and water to remove dust or debris.

  2. Apply plastic polish or automotive polishing compound using a microfiber cloth. Learn one method on how to polish epoxy here.

  3. Buff in a circular motion until the scratch blends into the surface.

  4. Wipe clean and repeat if necessary.

For Deeper Scratches:

  1. Clean and dry the surface thoroughly.

  2. Wet sand with 800 to 1500 grit sandpaper, working gently in circular motions.

  3. Polish the surface with a plastic or epoxy-safe polishing compound.

  4. Finish with a clean microfiber cloth to restore shine.

How to Fix Cloudiness in an Epoxy Table Top

Cloudiness can stem from surface abrasion, trapped moisture, or a poor-quality resin. Here are your options for removing it:

If Cloudiness Is on the Surface Only:

  1. Clean the table top using mild soap and a lint-free cloth.

  2. Use a polishing compound to buff out the dullness.

  3. Apply a thin epoxy refresh coat if needed for clarity restoration.

If Cloudiness Is Within the Epoxy Layer:

  1. Lightly sand the entire surface with 220 grit sandpaper. See our sanding guide for effective techniques.

  2. Clean off all residue with a damp cloth.

  3. Apply a new flood coat using a high-quality epoxy such as UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy.

  4. Let it cure in a temperature-controlled, humidity-free space for best results.

FAQs: Epoxy Table Top Repairs

Question #1: Can I fix cloudy epoxy without sanding?

If the cloudiness is only on the surface, buffing with a polishing compound may restore clarity without sanding, but to achieve a crystal-clear finish again, you'll likely need to reapply a thin epoxy layer, which can mesh seamlessly with the original if done properly.

Question #2: What if I get bubbles during my repair coat?

Use a heat gun or torch immediately after pouring to release trapped air bubbles.

Question #3: Can I apply epoxy over a scratched table top?

Yes, but you should sand and clean the surface first to ensure proper adhesion.

Question #4: Will the repaired area blend in?

With proper prep and application using UltraClear Epoxy, the repair will blend seamlessly with the rest of the surface, with a high-gloss, crystal-clear finish.

Question #5: What’s the best epoxy for a refresh coat?

Use UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy for most surface repairs. If your project involved deep layers that need to be treated, you can use UltraClear Deep Pour Epoxy for thicker reapplications.
