An epoxy project can be an exciting undertaking and is often easier than new users expect. But each time, before the real fun can begin, there's a planning stage, during which the appropriate supplies are gathered and the epoxy work area is prepared.
Because epoxy comes in a variety of different forms, each specializing in a different array of projects, it's important to figure out which one is right for your needs. Many epoxy users actually use particular terms almost interchangeably, and unfortunately that causes a lot of confusion between newcomers.
In this article, we'll be answering the question, "Is there a difference between table top resin and epoxy?" After there, we'll talk about the primary types of epoxy (notably those used for DIY projects) and explaining which situations they're best for.
Is there a difference between table top resin and epoxy?
The majority of people who ask this question seem to be referring to deep casting resin and table top epoxy. In such a case, the answer is yes, there are multiple differences. We'll explain below.
"Table top resin" is actually table top epoxy.
Most epoxy resins are produced and packaged as two separate components: resin and hardener. When combined these components turn into epoxy, which will harden if properly measured, mixed, and cured. These types of epoxies are called "two-part epoxies".
(Note: When someone says "resin" they usually mean epoxy, but it can also be referring to the resin component of epoxy, which must be mixed with hardener before it becomes epoxy.)
Among available epoxy types is table top epoxy. Commonly used for bars and tables, this high-strength epoxy is generally the strongest available option within any brand lineup, with the caveats that it can't be poured in thick layers and has a tighter timeframe for application.
UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy: Our premium table top epoxy
Available in our store is our acclaimed UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy. This top-notch table top epoxy features exceptional durability, with a Shore hardness rating of 98, and can be poured in self-leveling layers of 1/8 inch, the ideal thickness for most finishes.
"Epoxy" in this question likely refers to deep casting epoxy.
To contrast table top epoxy, there's deep casting resin, also know as Deep Pour Epoxy. The production process for this type of two-part epoxy results in a variant that is not quite as strong as table top epoxy, but is more versatile. It has a much longer working time after being mixed and can be applied in thick layers that readily conform to almost any space.
Deep casting resins have a much lower viscosity, meaning they flow almost like water. Because of this, they need to be contained during application, either by a temporary dam, rails, or the walls of a resin mold.
UltraClear Deep Pour Epoxy: Our premium deep casting resin
Our UltraClear Deep Pour Epoxy is a high-grade deep casting resin which allows for layers of up to two inches at a time, with seamless bonding between additional layers. Typically used for river tables and deep casting art, it's the perfect choice for any project that needs thick layers, allowing users to prevent common concerns like air bubbles from becoming a problem.
Which types of projects are table top epoxy and deep casting resin best for?
Though either epoxy is viable for most projects, they each excel at different types.
Table top epoxy is best for:
- Bar tops and countertops with a flat surface (including live edge)
- Table tops with a flat-surface (including live edge)
- Sealing flat works of art (e.g., paintings)
- Applying an epoxy seal coat for any type of project
Though there are many other niche possibilities, these represent the vast majority of epoxy projects. The best epoxy in these cases is UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy.
Deep casting resin is best for:
- River tables (especially the river vein)
- Deep casting resin art (often using resin molds)
- Epoxy sculptures (deep pour epoxy is easier to shape and sand)
- Any other project that requires an epoxy layer thicker than 1/4 inch
It's also not unusual for users to make use of table top epoxy as a final topcoat for their deep casting projects. For these types of projects, we recommend UltraClear Deep Pour Epoxy.
Is there an epoxy that can do all of these things?
Sadly, no. Regardless of the formula used to create the epoxy, there will always be compromises made. That being said, at UltraClear we often an in-between option, our UltraClear Art & Craft Epoxy.
This is a craft epoxy designed primarily for resin art projects. It's stronger than Deep Pour Epoxy but can still be poured in slightly thicker layers than our Table Top Epoxy. Choose this type of epoxy when you need something that's just a little more lenient than a table top epoxy but still has a hefty strength rating.
Be wary of epoxies that overpromise
These days, there are numerous epoxy products on the market. While some of these are legitimate, many are sold by dealers who overpromise on what the product is capable of while offering a surprisingly low cost for purchase. These are called budget brand epoxies.
Unfortunately, not only do these products fail to deliver, but they also underperform, resulting in failed cures or a murky finish, with the consequences falling on the user.
Most of these subpar epoxies are first produced in foreign economies with lax standards on safety and quality, then imported to the U.S., which bypasses many of the regulations that prevent shoddy products from being sold to users.
To avoid these issues, focus on buying from a epoxy dealer with a credible reputation for quality. At UltraClear, for instance, all of our epoxy products are 100% made in the USA. Not only do our products meet the regulatory standards of the U.S. for quality and safety, but they also meet our own extra high standards for results that stand the test of time.
UltraClear Epoxy: Resin Products of Unmatched Quality
As with any material, epoxy resin has both pros and cons. But no other sealant has so few weaknesses, and that's what puts epoxy above all other options when it comes to being a finish for high-traffic fixtures and furniture such as countertops, table tops, and bar tops. And among epoxy resin products, there are none that match the quality of UltraClear.
You can find our UltraClear Epoxy products on the following pages:
- UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy: The classic choice for bar tops, countertops, and table tops. Rock-solid, waterproof, and crystal-clear.
- UltraClear Deep Pour Epoxy: Our deep pour casting resin. Ideal for thick layers, such as those needed for river tables.
- UltraClear Art & Craft Epoxy: Our arts and crafts resin, designed for smaller artistic endeavors which typically involve resin molds and require a bit more fluidity than bar top epoxy.
With high chemical and physical resistance, UltraClear resins can withstand and endure many forms of wear and tear without breaking a sweat or showcasing any cosmetic damage.
Plus, in addition to its ease of application, they also require little upkeep to maintain its pristine appearance. With a high-quality epoxy finish, you can expect a minimum lifespan of 7 years, with no need for reapplication. Beyond that, it's a breeze to renew that coating, requiring only a light sanding and a fresh layer of epoxy.
